Tidbits and Trivia
• Max Perlich was originally supposed to reprise the role he created on Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Whistler was supposed to be Angel's guide, but Perlich was unavailable for filming and the role of Doyle was created.
• David Boreanaz and Christian Kane are the only actors to appear in both the first and last episodes of Angel.
• Christian Kane originally auditioned for the role of Riley Finn on Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
• The character of Charles Gunn was named after brothers James Gunn(director of Slither) and Sean Gunn (Kirk on Gilmore Girls). Sean appeared in two season one episodes, Hero and She, as a different character in each one.
• Andy Hallett appeared in 40 episodes as a guest star before being added as a regular cast member.
• Stephanie Romanov appeared in more episodes than any other recurring character, playing Lilah Morgan for a total of 35 episodes during seasons one through four.
• Co-creator and executive producer David Greenwalt wrote L.A. Song, the song Lindsey performs in Caritas in the episode Dead End. Christian Kane (Lindsey) provides vocals.
• The theme to Cordelia's sitcom in Birthday was written by David Greenwalt and performed by he and consulting producer Marti Noxon.
• Creator Joss Whedon made an appearance on the show as Lorne's cousin Numfar in the episode Through the Looking Glass.
• Writer David Fury appears twice. The first time as a demon worshipper in Reprise and the second time in Smile Time as a puppeteer.
• At the time of Angel's cancellation, its ratings on the network were second only to Smallville.
• Mercedes McNab and David Boreanaz are the only actors to appear in both the first episode of Buffy and the final episode of Angel.
• Until the final six episodes of the show, Mercedes McNab had been listed as a guest star. For the final six she was added to the opening credits as a regular.
• The character of Doyle was not originally intended to have an Irish accent. This was changed when Glenn Quinn was hired.
• Characters from Buffy the Vampire Slayer to crossover to Angel from time to time include Oz, Willow, the Master, Darla, Drusilla, Spike, Harmony, Faith, Anne (originally known as Chantarelle and Lily on BtVS), Buffy and Andrew.
• According to rumors, Firefly actress Morena Baccarin was originally slated to take the role of season five character Eve. Baccarin was apparently involved in another new series at the time and could not get out of it to film Angel. Production on that show was stopped after one episode was filmed, but the part of Eve had already gone to Sarah Thompson.
• David Boreanaz directed the season five episode Soul Purpose.
• Christian Kane and Sarah Thompson had known each other for many years before being brought together onscreen as Lindsey and Eve.
• In the episode A Hole in the World, when Lorne and Angel have Eve sing for them, the song she sings is L.A. Song, which was previously performed by Lindsey in Caritas in season two.
• Alexis Denisof did not appear in the episode Destiny because he was off marrying Alyson Hannigan.
• Actors from Joss' show Firefly to appear on Angel include Gina Torres as Jasmine in season four and Adam Baldwin as Marcus Hamilton in season five. Summar Glau appeared in the season three episode Waiting in the Wings, before Firefly began.
• Carlos Jacott appeared in the season one episode The Bachelor Party. He'd also appeared on Buffy the Vampire Slayer in the episode Anne and would go on to appear on Firefly in their first episode.
• One more Whedon hat trick. Actor Jonathan Woodward, who'd played Knox on Angel, was also on Buffy the Vampire Slayer playing Holden Webster and Firefly as Tracey.
• Andy Umberger appeared in the first season episode I Fall To Pieces. He'd played D'Hoffryn on Buffy and an Alliance officer on Firefly.
